Corn Removal

Corns are a buildup of hard, thick areas of skin. Although these hardened areas of skin can form anywhere on your body, you’ll usually see them on your feet, hands, or fingers.

Corns tend to be small and round. You are most likely to see corns on the tops or sides of your toes.

Some corns may not be painful when they first develop but then become painful over time as they thicken.

There are several types of corns:

Hard corns: These are small, hard dense areas of skin usually within a larger area of thickened skin forms on the top of toes or areas where there is bone pressure against the skin.

Soft corns: These corns are whitish/gray and have a softer, rubbery texture, usually appears between the toes.

Seed corns: These corns are small and usually form on the bottom of feet.

How are corns treated?

Treatment depends on your symptoms and what caused the corn. For the typical corn, removing the buildup of skin is an effective treatment.

While there are some home treatments available, if your corn is painful, it’s best to meet with a doctor for professional treatment.

Treatments generally include:

Trimming: To do this at home, soak your feet for around 20 minutes to soften the skin and use a pumice stone to gently scrape away the tough layers of skin. A doctor can use a tool to more effectively remove the skin. This will reduce the amount of pressure being put on your foot.

Chemical: This treatment method is similar to trimming, except that it uses chemical products that will dissolve the skin. One of the more common products is salicylic acid, which dissolves keratin, or what the dead skin is made of.

Footpads and Toe Protection: While not a form of treatment, a foot pad inside the shoe can ease some of the discomfort. A toe splint is another option to keep your toes from rubbing against each other.
