What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion or skin polishing is commonly known as superficial skin resurfacing procedure in which the upper layers of skin are removed by the use of a microdermabrasion machine.
Who can undergo microdermabrasion procedure?
- Anybody who wants to get a glowing skin
- Anybody who wants to improve skin tone and texture.
- People with superficial scarring and discoloration due to acne or sun damage.
- People with fine wrinkling and age spots.
- People with stretch marks.
What happens in the procedure?
Microdermabrasion procedure is basically done with two types of machines:
Crystal Microdermabrasion: In this process fine crystals of aluminum oxide, magnesium oxide etc are pumped into the upper layer of skin causing it to abrade. Then suction removes the crystals and the abraded cells from the upper layer of skin. The speed of movement of the handpiece, the number of passes and the suction pressure are adjusted according to the depth of treatment required and the sensitivity of the skin.
Diamond Microdermabrasion: This process uses a diamond tip to abrade the upper skin layer instead of crystals. This makes diamond microdermabrasion safer around eyes and nose as there is a danger of crystals damaging eyes or getting inhaled. It is also called ‘’Diamond Peel’’
How long does it take and how frequently can it be done?
The procedure time depends on the size of the area to be treated. It takes about 15 mins for face and 2-3 hours for full body treatment. You can repeat it in 2-4 week interval. 4 sittings will give you an excellent result with glowing even-toned skin with a nice smooth texture.
The skin feels soft, smooth and refreshed after the procedure. The results are immediately apparent and the skin continues to improve for few days. Many people like to do this procedure before a party or a social function as there is an immediate effect with no side effect. The face is the most common area treated but any skin area, including neck, chest, back, hands and even full body polishing can be done. Brides especially like to do a full body polishing before the wedding.
Microdermabrasion can be combined with other treatments like peels or masks to improve their efficacy.
Who should avoid it?
It is avoided if the patient has an active skin infection or if the skin is inflamed or irritated. There is no age limit for microdermabrasion. Everyone from teens for acne spots to old people for aging changes can undergo the procedure safely.
Does it have any side-effects?
Microdermabrasion is a very safe procedure with negligible downtime. It is a painless procedure and requires no anesthesia. The patient can immediately get back to his/her daily activities. The skin might become a little red in few patients but it settles in a few hours.
